My Besson New Creation trumpet ( Ser. 222xxx ) dates from 1955 so I guess your Flugal is younger than that. If it's in good condition you might get £200-£300 here in the UK. I have one of these flugelhorns, and it is a very nice professional horn. I ditched my Kanstul 1525 after I realized how much I preferred the sound of the f besson. According to Horn-u-copia, that serial number is from around 1950. They are well made horns with a beautiful tone, but tricky intonation. They are comparable to other small bore French made flugels from the time such as Courtois, Couesnon, and Selmer. Price should be in the $1000 range give or take depending on condition. Make sure you use a French taper mouthpiece.

Frank, are you assuming it's an English Besson because of the word 'prototype'? I know lots of English Bessons had this word on them but I think 'Systeme Prototype' was a French Besson label. Jolaanaa, does the horn have any marks indicating where it was made? Mike

Hi Mike. Not so much the designation 'prototype' as the 6 figure serial number. The Kanstul made versions had 5 figure numbers according to the Gearhead website. http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/yy208/scipio2/Bessoncataloguefrom1990s.jpg If it's one of these it will be worth serious money in the US. Frank, this site is discussing Kanstul-made Bessons. I'm not aware of Kanstul making any Bessons marked 'System Prototype' and as you said, the Kanstul horns don't normally have 6 digit serials. IMO this horn is most likely to be a true French Besson, made in Paris. Mike

Yes Mike, you're probably right. I posted the Besson Loyalist site to help jolaanaa eliminate a few possibilities. Cheers, Frank _________________ Fairly large collection. I have a Kanstul made Besson MEHA with a serial number of 488. It says systeme prototype on a scroll on the bell so there are Kanstuls with that on the trumpet.

Well, obviously that's a French Besson (Paris) rather than an English Besson (London). _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet Selmer Radial Bb Trumpet Yamaha 6335S Bb Trumpet Besson 709 Bb Trumpet Bach 184L Bb Cornet Yamaha 731 Bb Flugelhorn
